Will you get an F-1 interview appointment in time?
Most F-1 applicants are not facing a shortage of appointments. They are facing a deadline. Enter the program start date on your I-20 and the post you plan to apply at, and this tool works out whether the officially published wait gets your visa back in time — and what to do if it does not.
What the published waits actually look like
Student appointments are triaged differently from visitor appointments, and it shows in the State Department’s own figures. Across the 197 posts publishing a student (F, M, J) next-available date, the median wait is 15 days and 104 posts are inside two weeks. Only 25 run beyond two months — which is where nearly all genuine F-1 timing risk sits.

Questions students ask about timing
How long is the wait for an F-1 visa interview appointment?
It depends entirely on the post. The State Department publishes a next available student (F, M, J) appointment for each embassy and consulate, and the spread is wide — many posts are inside two weeks while a handful run several months. This tool reads those published figures directly.
Can I apply at a different consulate to get an earlier appointment?
Applicants are generally free to choose among the posts serving their country of residence, and published waits often differ substantially between posts in the same country. The tool lists same-country posts with shorter published waits whenever they exist.
Should I cancel my appointment to look for an earlier one?
Not if the one you hold already gets your visa back before your program starts. Rescheduling releases a confirmed appointment before you have secured another, and if the earlier slot does not materialize you can be left with neither. Enter the appointment you hold and the tool will tell you whether it is worth the risk.
What happens if the earliest appointment is after my program start date?
You have several routes: request an expedited appointment with your I-20 as evidence of the deadline, ask your designated school official for a later start date on a reissued I-20, check whether another post in your country has a shorter wait, or ask about deferring to the next intake.
How early can I enter the United States on an F-1 visa?
No more than 30 days before the program start date on your I-20. Getting the visa earlier does not let you travel earlier, though it does remove the risk of missing the start of your program.
What this tool deliberately does not do
It does not monitor live appointment openings, log in to the scheduling portal, automate booking, or republish crowd-sourced slot sightings. Every figure here is the State Department’s own published wait, with the retrieval date attached, so it can be checked against the source. See our methodology and corrections policy.
